Filiz studied Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. She then joined the laboratory of Andrea Musacchio at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy, to work on the structural and functional characterization of a kinetochore subcomplex in mitosis. After earning her PhD in 2009, Filiz worked as a postdoc in Karl-Peter Hopfner’s group at the Gene Center Munich, where she studied mechanisms of cytosolic RNA and DNA sensing in mammalian cells. She joined the CRC 235 - Emergence of life after her position at the Graduate School of Quantitative Biosciences, LMU as lecturer for 5.5 years.
